The Harley Davidson Lifestyle

By Gregory Paul

What comes to mind when someone mentions the word Harley Davidson? Personally, I think of power, machismo, and anything that is hard core. I imagine somebody with massive arms, scary tattoos of snakes and dragons, long salt and pepper hair, sleeveless black shirt, leather coattails, earrings and all the works. The Harley Davidson is a legendary giant that owns more than 50% of the US motorcycle market and it is a symbol of raw power.

Imagine my surprise, when I came across an article about how the seat height of a Harley Davidson is a major issue to most buyers. Apparently, hog riders are most concerned about the comfort while atop their monster ride. Contrary to common perception, these peoples Harleys are not for display of power, but more for a convenient cruise.

It does make sense how a perfect seat height can lend composure while on top of a hog. It does give a boost of confidence to the rider knowing he can easily plant his feet flat on the ground when he needs to. Someone desperately trying to reach the ground with his foot is a pretty funny picture.

When you scan Harley Davidson history, it is clearly dominated by rebel images with raked out choppers like Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider, or moody nonconformists who take to the open road to escape boring jobs and loveless marriages.

It is surprising to note that today, there is a huge diversity of Harley Davidson owners. It could be a guy jumping from a Harley and flipping open his laptop to excitedly check on his facebook account. Across the road a woman is talking on her cellphone checking out how her kids are doing in college and then speed off on her hog.

There is a dramatic change in the clientele demographics of the Harley Davidson apparently because people want to own a hog for different reasons these days. While some are keeping true to the lifestyle, others simply want the prestige it brings.

Whatever the reasons may be, a hog is picked mainly for the reputation it represents. It is an icon of power and freedom. When you own a Harley Davidson, you are a legend, and you become part of its history.

The Harley Davidson is clearly in a league of its own in the motorcycle industry. It is timeless classic, and will always represent strength and craftsmanship. It will always speak of freedom and will forever rule the road.
