If you've decided to visit Australia, I'm sure there is a slight amount of nervousness setting in about some of its creatures. No doubt someone has told you a little horror story that has set your mind racing. This article will tell you more about some of these nasty creatures. It also aims to reassure you that there is a VERY low chance that you will encounter one of these dangerous Australian animals.

Australia probably does have more than its fair share of horrible creatures. There is one that can in fact kill you in less than 3 minutes. There are at least 10 that could kill you and they range greatly in size. The Great White Shark is probably the biggest and the Funnel Web Spider is one of the smallest. These two are often talked about by travellers.

Examining the facts clearly shows that you have nothing to worry about in terms of meeting a dangerous Australian animal. Did you know that there have only been 11 shark deaths over the last 50 years? Media hype would make you expect more. In the same time period, there have been NO deaths caused by the Funnel Web Spider due to the availability of anti-venom

The Great White Shark

Did you know that sharks have an extra sense? They can detect electromagnetic fields that are emitted by the movement of living animals. They are also huge. The great white shark can be as long as 6m and can weigh over 2,200kg. Clearly not something you would like to see whilst you are out swimming.

Don't be put off going for a swim as this is an important past-time that you should do as part of your Australian holiday. You could be fooled by thinking someone is playing a practical joke on you. These spiders look like a spider that you might buy from a joke shop. It's black and can be very glossy. The funnel web spider likes to create little burrows so you are more likely to find them in garden rockeries but they are also found in garages. They like water too so are sometimes found around swimming pools. There is a species called the Sydney Funnel Web which is found in and around Sydney.

If you see any spider in Australia, it's best to keep away. Most are in fact totally harmless but it's better to be safe than sorry. If the funnel web is going to bite you, he'll lift up onto his back legs and show you his fangs. Now would be a good time to run!

Sometimes the funnel web will give a dry bite i.e. no venom. So, only 25% of their bites contain venom. You'd feel pain pretty much straight away and you'd need to get yourself to hospital in case you need anti venom. Saltwater Crocodile

There are in fact 2 reported deaths from crocodiles every year. That makes them the most dangerous animal in Australia from a statistics point of view. They are found in the very north of Australia but can be seen as far down as Broome to the west and Tropical Queensland in the East. It's easy to avoid an encounter with a croc by following some simple rules.

Their name is a little strange as they actually prefer to live in freshwater rivers and lakes. They can grow to a huge size, are very territorial and can be very ferocious.

Best way to avoid them is to obey any NO SWIMMING signs in the top end and the far north Queensland areas. The signs usually have a crocodile on them to warn you. If you go off the beaten track, don't risk going for a swim in this area as they may have just not put a sign up and there could still be crocodiles about.

Don't camp too near the waters edge and vary your washing habits. That means, don't go to the same spot every day, otherwise a crocodile could be waiting for you one morning!

The Meaning of Sports to Me

Growing up in the beautiful town of Abilene, Texas in the center of Texas was great. The city is wonderful, the people are always nice, and there is always something to do. I couldn't have asked for a better place to grow up in. I do, however, wish I could say the same for my childhood.

As a youngster, for the first few years of my life, I had a great life. My mother and father raised me in a wonderful Christian household. I was brought to church with them every week, never missing a day. My parents were both raised in the church so naturally they were going to do the same with me. Even at the age of three I remember playing in the nursery with other children. I remember going to Vacation Bible School and learning about stories in the Bible (mainly David and Goliath) even as a young child.

When I was a five year old, my mother got a new job that demanded she work every Sunday. As a result, my father and I would stay home on Sundays, rather than going to services as we used to. Over the next few years, my mother and father grew distant from each other, and ended up separating when i was eight years old.

When I'd ask my mother about them, she'd always promise me that everything was fine between the two of them. She'd even go so far as bringing my father to the house so that it'd appear they were still together (even though they'd always either argue or not speak to each other when he was here).

As they say, every cloud has a silver lining and there was one in my case. I would constantly lock myself in my room and listen to the radio when I was younger, and one day I happened upon a baseball game on the radio. I listened intently as I learned more about the game.

Every day, I'd listen to the Rangers on the radio during baseball season. I came to understand what a strikeout was, what a home run was, and what everything else meant. I'd even hear my father discussing the team with his friends, and Nolan Ryan became my favorite player on the team (he was my father's favorite too).

Every time my dad came by, I would always close my door, blast the radio, and hope to hear the Rangers on it. My mother came to realize my obsession with the team and she bought me a hat that I would wear every single day. This was during the 1983 season and the team wasn't great, but it was so much fun to hear them win.

The Texas Rangers were truly my escape during my childhood. They'd take me away from all of my pains, and give me an outlet that made me happy. To this day, I love the team and experience the same joy with each win that I did back then.

What makes it work is the simple, but beautiful story. The movie is bubbly, spirited and a feel-good kind with many parts that are typical of romantic comedies.

With shades of the extremely talented Julia Roberts, the debutant Anna Hathaway is the one that takes everyones breath away. Not to forgot, the evergreen Julie Andrews who adds a touch of elegance to the part of Mias grandmother.

Whether you will be dayhiking or doing a multi-day backpacking trip, these items will insure a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.

One of the most important things is having a map of the trail you will explore. Get one at the park visitor center or find one online that you can download. This will keep you from getting lost, help you identify new trails to check out and possibly help rescuers locate you if you're in trouble.

Get yourself a good map reading compass. Using the map and compass together, you can orient your map to your direction and surroundings, choose the correct path and keep yourself on course.

Staying hydrated is crucial. You can survive about a month with no food, but only a few days without water. You can become dehydrated quickly by exertion, perspiration, heat and exposure. It's a good idea to have 2 one liter bottles of water. Also, carry some water purification means with you. I use a liquid water treatment drops.

It's possible to spend an unexpected night in the woods. Always have some extra food, enough for an additional day if you need it. Even having a few back up whole food bars with you should do the trick. Especially if they constitute meal replacement. You will have the extra energy with you just in case.

Bring a couple more layers of clothing. These will serve to keep you warm and dry should the temperature drop unexpectedly, you somehow become wet or both. Choose layers that are synthetic. Most of them will still retain some insulative quality even if they are wet and they tend to dry a lot faster.

Pack some sort of light source like a headlamp or flashlight. If you are forced to make camp or hike out in the dark, you will be able to see trail debris an obstacles that could cause danger.

Having an accident or injury in the backcountry is no fun. Bring a small first aid kit with you. You can create one out of household supplies but don't forget hiking needs like moleskin or blister treatment. I recommend taking a basic wilderness medicine course.

Matches, a lighter and or candle as firestarters. Be certain to keep them in a waterproof container. Only light a fire in the wilderness if it is a matter of survival, not just simply staying warm if an additional layer of clothing will do. Prevent wildfires, use caution!

A folding camp knife will serve many a purpose. Be sure that the one you choose has a blade that locks when open. I've seen knives that don't lock take off finger tips.

Don't forget the sunblock. Bring some sunglasses as well and you may want a cap with a visor or brim for extra UV protection. Your skin and eyes will be much happier.

What Biking in Hawaii Really Means

One of the advantages to biking in Hawaii (besides the mild climate) is that no matter where you go you will be graced with some of the most beautiful scenery ever! Always have your camera ready, because you never know when youll top that hill only to discover a breathtaking view of the ocean! Here are some of Hawaiis finest bike trails just waiting for you to experience them firsthand.

Kaena Point is located between Haliewa and Waianae and offers many trails to choose from. There are trails for riders of all experience and skill levels. Steep climbs, fun descents, lots of rocks, and did we mention spectacular views of the ocean? There are a couple of things you should be aware of though. First of all, the trails are also open to ATVs, so it can get crowded, especially after a good rain when everyone wants to play in the mud. Also, most of the track is not shaded, so bring plenty of water. Always make sure to lock your car doors, especially at the Waianae trailhead.

Some people go to Hawaii for the scenery and trails, and there are people who go to Hawaii for the scenery and advanced trails. If you are more of the novice biker then you will want to make sure that you check out Kulioou Valley which carries trails for more of the novice rider. However, on these trails there are access to more advanced trails that lead to steep hills, fast declines, and jumps.

With that said, if you are more of the advanced biker and are looking for more of a challenge, then you will want to seek out Mililani. Mililani is a network of trails near Waipio and covers 3 valleys and ridges. The reason why these trails are more for the advanced biker are because they provide very steep hills, that lead to very steep downgrades at the crest of them. With that said, think about 30 mph steep that lead to valleys and such. You really need to know what you are doing in order to get through these courses but if you can, the scenery is unbelievable. These trails can be somewhat tricky to get to because there is a housing development nearby. The best way to get to them is parallel to the H-2 highway, in which there is a chain link fence there for easy access.

If you are looking for more of an endurance run instead of all the curves and jumps, you will want to check out the Aiea Loop. This is an endurance run that is still packed with very steep inclines and declines but also is a nice 4.5 mile ride. The most exciting thing about these trails is the view that you get with them. This is because the trail follows a ridge overlooking Pearl Harbor, Oahu, and the Halawa Valley which makes it very dangerous when wet so be careful.

Last but not least if you are looking for something that is more scenery than trail, you will want to check out the Kula Forest Reserve. This is a great place to ride and take in the exceptional views, but also comes with a few inclines and declines that are fun yet manageable.
