Xbox 360 - Avoid The Ring Of Death And Improve Reliability

By Marc Sandford

Have you recently acquired a brand new Xbox 360? Get off to a good start by trying to get the most out of your console in terms of life expectancy. If the Jasper chip set is used in the motherboard of your console, then you probably don't need to worry about overheating.

Even so, there are other things that you need to address. Until something goes wrong, we tend not to worry about things, but if you've experienced the ring of death, then you'll appreciate the importance of preventative care and maintenance. A list of proper maintenance and care tips for your Xbox:

1.) Don't throw away the packaging that your console came in. Someday you'll want to bring your Xbox on your travels and packing it in the box that it came in will protect it from damage. It is simpler than building a container of your own.

2.) It's natural to place game cases as well as other related stuff on top of the console. This is very handy but also harmful to your machine. The console tends to get too hot when used too much.

Objects kept on top of the console, insulates and locks in heat buildup. Something else to keep in mind is that your Xbox needs room to "breathe". Also avoid heat sources such as heaters, or other warm electronics.

3.) Make sure that your entertainment center is open on all of its sides. This allows lots of ventilation so that overheating is avoided.

4.) This tip is obvious to most people but still should be taken seriously. Keep the floor clear of cables. It's an accident waiting to happen since anyone could accidentally or deliberately (in the case of your pet) snag them and give the Xbox a good yank.

5.) Keep your console and the surrounding area free of all dust as well as grit. The cooling vents may draw in the dust which can trap the heat generated by the motherboard.

6.) If you're into modding, remember that your warranty will be voided once the console is opened. The warranty might not matter now, but they do come in handy should you get the red ring of death.
