3 Types Of Sports Bras

By Heather Dean

Having the right sports bra is important when you are exercising to prevent damage to what is called the Cooper's Ligament. This supports the breasts and keeps them looking good, so you want to give it the support that it needs in order to prevent sagging.

It is important to have the right fit in a sports bra. If you are not sure of your size, get fitted sooner rather than later, the results are worth it.

Many department stores (particularly Macy's and JC Pennys) have trained bra fitters. If you are uncomfortable having someone else fit you for a bra, there are many good guides online that you can follow to get the right measurements for a perfect fit.

There are basically three different types of sports bras that you can buy. Here are the basics.

#1 Compression sports bras.

This type of bra is almost always sold in a pullover style with no clasps. They are usually sold in small, medium and large sizes and not cup and band sizes. They are best if you are a size A or B cup.

Compression sports bras work by compressing the breasts against the chest to stabilize them and eliminate or greatly reduce movement. There is a huge variety of sports bras in this style to choose from and many major manufacturers make them.

#2 Encapsulating type bras.

This style works the best for women with larger breasts (C cup or higher) and works great for women who are well endowed.

Encapsulating sports bras work on what I like to call the "Divide and Conquer" approach. They work by separating the breasts and stabilizing them separately.

These bras look different than compression bras. They almost always have fasteners in the front or the back, and they are sized like a regular bra (ex: 38E). Sometimes they have underwire as well.

#3. Hybrid bras.

This type of bra actually works by combining features of the other two and is also good for women who have larger cup sizes.

Whatever type of sports bra that you end up getting make sure that it reduces bounce and that it fits. A good sports bra or two should always be part of your wardrobe for fitness.
